Mobile connectivity is a daily necessity for a growing number of people and companies. Ubiquitous access to the Internet at ever faster speeds is the main factor that has contributed to generate an explosion in the generation and exchange of mobile data. Data traffic in networks globally has grown at 65% per annum over the last 5 years and is expected to continue to increase at 40% per annum in the period 2017 to 2023. This means that, on average, data traffic will multiply by eight over the next 5 years. This massive expansion of data exchange opens the doors to the possibility of creating and developing a great diversity of new technological applications and new ways of relating to technology. It is expected that the effect of these new applications will have a great impact on the daily life of people and in all sectors of activity.
In a report for the Metropolitan Area of Barcelona (AMB), Institut Cerdà has analysed the changes that the telecommunications sector will have to face in the coming years to respond to the exponential growth of data traffic that will occur globally.
The accelerated evolution of the benefits of mobile and connectivity technologies will require a broad and progressive development of new physical infrastructure in both the public and the private ambits. This phenomenon, although still incipient, requires public administrations and private operators to initiate a process of analysis and forecasting of their physical and functional effects, so as to guarantee integration into the urban ecosystem, the use of future applications and efficiency in the management and implementation process in the metropolitan area.
