The Observatory of Innovation in the Consumer Goods Sector in Spain highlights the 20 most relevant


  • Nestlé’s Nutriplato healthy food programme, Alcampo’s new app or Mercadona’s Co-innovation Centre among the 20 innovations highlighted in the 2019 Observatory, among more than 300 projects analysed.

Institut Cerdà has presented The Observatory of Innovation in the Consumer Goods (OICG) Sector in Spain 2019 at the headquarters of COTEC in Madrid in the presence of a hundred representatives of companies from the sector. The aim was to highlight the progress made by all agents involved in the consumer goods supply chain and to publicise the challenges facing the sector.

 A group of 15 independent experts from the OICG 2019 has selected a total of 20 innovations from among more than 300 projects and initiatives analysed. Among the most noteworthy innovations are the Heineken Olivo project that cultivates barley among olive trees; the Lanjaron Red, a 100 percent recycled and recyclable bottle; Mercadona’s Jarro Centre for Co-innovation, which allows innovation based on consumer experience; Nestlé’s Nutriplato programme about nutritional education for children; San Benedetto’s Smart Water 4.0 project, to intelligently manage water resources; the El Corte Inglés digital supply network; the Farmidable platform for consumer communities; the Geever last mile sustainable distribution platform; the new Citibox startup incubator; the new Alcampo app; Cuits & beans’ cooked legumes; unsaturated vegetable oils for the food industry, Borges’ Healthy & Green solid oil 4.0; the new Hacendado black chocolate mini-bars with seeds; the new Dr. Oetker pizzas with a high vegetable content; the Hop of Estrella Galicia collaborative entrepreneurship program, the Junta de Castilla y León’s Agricool summer school; the Balfegó group’s tuna traceability and sustainability programme, the Naturecode traceability through intelligent labels initiative; Eroski’s Energy to Grow programme on feeding and healthy habits and the Rradivity of Fademur Launchpad that promotes the female entrepreneurship in the rural world.

This new edition of the Observatory emphasizes the need to adapt the large consumption supply chain to the new dietary habits of citizens who focus on a healthy, nutritious, balanced and conscious diet. Also highlighted among the ten challenges for 2019 specified in the report is the urgent need to resolve last mile package delivery, to reduce the impacts of the sector on the ecosystem, to commit to the circular economy and to promote social innovation throughout of the whole supply chain.

Carlos Cabrera, Institut Cerdà’s General Director said in the presentation that "the Observatory has highlighted the good health of the sector and its commitment to innovation, visualizing more than 300 projects that are being developed encompassing all the links in the large consumption supply chain in Spain. Our group of independent experts has selected 20 projects from amongst these 300 for inclusion in the report. "

Isabel Bombal, the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food General Director of Rural Development, Innovation and Forestry Policy, stressed that "everyone, from both the public and the private sphere, must incorporate the culture of innovation in our DNA. Our mission is to ensure that things are done well and not to hinder those who do it well. "

This year’s group of 15 independent experts was made up of Nuria María Arribas, Begoña de Benito, Eduard Calvo, Ignacio Cruz, José Luís García del Pueyo, Ignacio García Magarzo, Jaume Hugas, Juan Francisco Juliá, Fernando Móner, Josep Maria Montfort, Jordi Mur, Josep Puxeu, Mariluz Santos, Ana Troncoso y María Carmen Vidal.

According to Yolanda Cerdà, "up until now, the consumer goods supply chain had not highlighted that it is also one of the most innovative sectors of industry in Spain; the Observatory wants to provide annual verification of this fact." This is why the report is published annually.
